biden. that can be dangerous because he tends to get over his skis, but i think he'll be well prepared and they will be a lot more aggressive this go-around. >> you served with joe biden, what would be your advice to paul ryan. a lot of republicans seem overconfident how well ryan will do against ryan. mistake? >> the question that ryan has strong appeal, particularly in the midwest, just his personality, joe is joe. the slip-ups that you see are ones that were regular part of the menu when he was chair of the foreign relations committee and later chair of the judiciary. but it will be entertaining. joe is always entertaining. and i think you're going to see a very substantive debate with ryan. he is a master of factual presentations and i think you'll see a solid debate on the budget. >> jackie, one of the things i like to remind people, joe biden won almost all the debates over hillary and edwards. >> look what he did with the sarah palin debate last cycle. everyone thought that could have been a disaster and it wasn't. if he can prepare for these things, don't underestimate joe bide

and the president wrapping up final debate practice yesterday, joe biden was in north carolina and paul ryan in iowa. they traded jabs over the middle class. >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been buried. we agree. >> mitt romney is under pressure to give more details into both his tax reform proposal and plans for the middle class. yesterday, he finally offered up an idea saying in order to pay for his reform each taxpayer would have a limit on how much they could deduct. the number he threw out was $17,000 and compared that to a bucket saying you can take whatever deductions you want but once you hit $17,000 that's it. we heard his plan for undocumented immigrants. he would not revoke the temporary limitations adopted by the president but if elected there would be no more protections. we're coming back after the break. >> i wouldn't be where i am today if it wasn't for capella university. i go to work every day and know that i make a difference. when patients leave this office they have hope in their eyes. it make me feel like i'm really doi

joe biden will rally in florida around 9:00 this morning. meanwhile, republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan is in new hampshire. this is not a live picture, but him at the event from this morning. despite the small size, new hampshire has become a key battle ground state. ryan was there just last week. the latest polls show the president ahead of mitt romney in nine battle ground states. mr. obama's biggest leads are in ohio, new hampshire, and iowa. of course, this could change in the weeks to come. the tightest races at this point are nevada and north carolina. the national average of those polled has president obama with a 49.5%, the potential vote 44% for romney. >>>in this weekend's presidential address president obama is calling on congress to help homeowners. >> last week mortgage rates were at historic lows. but instead of helping more and more hard working families take advantage of those rates. congress was away on break. instead of worrying about you they had already gone home to worry about their campaigns. >> the president says congress has yet to act on leg

. jared bernstein served as chief economist and adviser to vice president biden from 2009 to 2011. he's now a senior fellow at the center on budget and policy priorities. douglas holtz-akin is a former director of the congressional budget office. he was chief economics adviser to john mccain's presidential campaign and is now president of the american action forum, a policy think tank. neither holds an official position with the current campaigns. jared, i want to stewart the $5 trillion number because there's a dispute over it, where it came from, what is the president referring to? >> mitt romney has proposed to cut taxes across the board by 20%. cut tax rates, i should be precise about that, because it matters. you lose $5 trillion in revenue over ten years if you cut tax rates by 20% across the board. that's the calculation of a non-partisan group widely agreed to be accurate, the tax policy center. now, here's where things get complicated because what the --. >> brown: you're going tligt there right away, aren't you?
